How to Choose a Moving Company (Without Getting Burned)
The questions to ask, the red flags to watch for, and why a DOT number matters more than a low quote.
Every moving company sounds trustworthy on the phone. The difference shows up in the contract — or the lack of one. Here's what actually separates a reputable mover from a risky one.
1. Check the DOT and MC Numbers
- Any company crossing state lines, and most operating within California, must carry a USDOT number and MC (Motor Carrier) number.
- Look them up directly on FMCSA's SAFER system — it shows active status, insurance on file, and safety history.
- A company that can't give you these numbers immediately is not one to book.
2. Get the Rate Structure in Writing
- Ask for the base rate, hourly rate, and per-mile rate before move day — not an estimate that "depends."
- Understand the minimum hours required and how partial hours are billed (by the minute is fairest to you).
- Ask directly: are there any additional fees for stairs, long carries, or bulky items?
3. Watch for These Red Flags
- A quote given only over the phone with no in-person or video walkthrough of your inventory.
- Pressure to pay a large deposit in cash with no receipt.
- No mention of valuation coverage or insurance for your belongings.
- A generic company name that changes slightly from the one on the truck or paperwork.

- Point out anything fragile, oversized, or requiring special handling before loading begins.
- Do a final sweep of every room after loading, before the crew leaves.

- Walk the crew through where each labeled room goes before unloading starts.
- Keep the "first night" box within reach — you'll want it before you want to unpack anything else.
- Do a final walkthrough of the truck bed before it drives off, to confirm nothing was missed.
